Israel / Supreme Court allows Netanyahu to form government, will take oath as Prime Minister on 13 May

·      Netanyahu will be the first Prime Minister of Israel who succeeded in forming a government amid allegations of corruption

·      Court refuses to ban Netanyahu and former army chief Beni Gantz's plan to share power

Tel Aviv. The Supreme Court of Israel rejected the plea seeking disqualification of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and allowed him to form the government. Netanyahu was accused of corruption in this petition. Netanyahu will become Prime Minister for the fourth consecutive time. Earlier in June 1996, he became Prime Minister one more time. This time, opposition parties were continuously opposing his assuming power.

Did not win the election

In the parliamentary elections held in March, Netanyahu missed out on a majority of three seats. On the other hand, the two major parties of the country did not get enough votes to form a coalition government. Netanyahu's Likud Party had got 36 seats and its (Likud Party)-led right wing had 58 seats. Former Army Chief Benny Gantz's Blue and White Party got 33 seats and his (Blue and White)-led left wing faction got 55 seats. A 120-seat Israeli parliament requires 61 seats for a majority. Even then, both were trying to form a coalition government.

Netanyahu is trapped in corruption charges

Netanyahu, 70, is Israel's longest-serving prime minister. He has been the Prime Minister for 14 years in four terms. A corruption trial is starting against him from March 17. He faces charges of cheating, bribing and betrayal. If he forms a government, he will be the first prime minister in the history of Israel who managed to form a government amid allegations of corruption. At the same time, 60-year-old Gantz started his political career in December 2018. Prior to this he was Chief of the Military of Israel between 2011-15.
